You try a new toothpaste, brush for a few seconds, then inspect the tube. Is this thing on? There are barely any bubbles. Somewhere, your toothbrush would like a little credit for showing up.
If that sounds familiar, welcome to the surprisingly emotional business of changing toothpaste.
SLS-free toothpaste can feel different from the foamy formula you grew up with. And because brushing is something you do almost on autopilot, even a small change can feel suspicious.
But before you squeeze out another dollop, there is something useful to know about those bubbles—and the job they have been getting credit for.
What does SLS actually do in toothpaste?
SLS is short for sodium lauryl sulfate. You might also see the Canadian spelling, sodium lauryl sulphate. Same ingredient, slightly different spelling wardrobe.

So the bubbles do have a reason for being there. The mistake is giving them the entire job description.
Think of a busy kitchen. The person carrying the plates gets noticed. The person quietly chopping all the vegetables might deserve a little recognition too.
Your toothpaste has several ingredients doing different things. Your brush is also doing physical work. The most visible part of the routine is only one part of the routine.
Does SLS-free toothpaste still foam?
It can. “SLS-free” does not mean the bubbles have packed their bags. It means the formula leaves out one particular foaming ingredient. What happens next depends on what takes its place.
Some toothpastes create a lighter lather; others are designed to produce very little foam. So two tubes wearing the same SLS-free badge can give you quite a different morning.
What does Sudanta use instead of SLS?
Our formula uses two cleansing ingredients together: Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate and Coco-Glucoside. You can find both on the full ingredient list.
Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate is an amino acid–derived cleanser with an EWG Skin Deep ingredient hazard score of 1. And yes, its name looks a little like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate when you are squinting at a tube before coffee. They are different ingredients. The shared “sodium” is not a secret family reunion.
Coco-Glucoside is the second surfactant, working alongside it in the formula’s cleansing and foaming system.
Long names, quite practical jobs. Together, they give the formula its gentle, lighter foam.
That is the useful detail behind the SLS-free label: you can see which ingredients are doing the work in its place. You can expect some lather, without using the amount of it as your brushing scorecard.
What does EWG 1 mean?
Three letters and a number. A little translation helps.
EWG stands for Environmental Working Group, the organisation behind the Skin Deep ingredient database. Its hazard scores run from 1 to 10, with 1 at the low-hazard end. Here, a lower number is the better score. How EWG’s ratings work.
One detail worth keeping: this score refers to the ingredient, not the whole tube. It is not a gentleness test, a measure of how well a toothpaste cleans, or the separate EWG VERIFIED product certification.
EWG also rates how much information is available. For sodium lauroyl glutamate, it lists that data as limited. Think of the number as one useful detail to read alongside the full explanation. See EWG’s ingredient entry.
Which brings us to the next question: what should get the credit for cleaning your teeth?
Can toothpaste clean with less foam?
Yes. Foam volume alone cannot tell you how well a toothpaste meets your dental needs.
Toothpaste can include mild abrasives that help remove debris and surface stains, alongside other ingredients that help it spread and stay usable. These roles are explained in the ADA’s guide to toothpaste components.
Here is the little bathroom conversation worth imagining:
Foam: “Did you see that performance?”
Toothbrush: “Lovely. I was round the back, doing the molars.”
The point is not to retire the bubbles in disgrace. It is to stop using them as a progress bar.
Check the product’s intended benefits and your brushing routine, rather than treating a mouthful of foam as proof that the work is done.
Why do some people prefer toothpaste without SLS?
Sometimes the answer is simple: they enjoy a lighter foam.

That does not make SLS a villain in every bathroom. Nor does it mean every uncomfortable mouth needs the same replacement tube.
If irritation keeps happening, take the actual ingredient list to your dentist. “This is what I used, and this is what happened” gives them something more helpful than “the internet said the green one was better.”
It also gives you permission to stop guessing. A little less detective work before breakfast sounds rather nice.
Is SLS-free the same as fluoride-free?
No—and this is the label detail worth slowing down for.
SLS and fluoride have different roles. A toothpaste can leave out SLS while keeping fluoride. It can also leave out both.
If your aim is simply to change the foam or avoid SLS, you do not automatically need to change your fluoride use. Check both features separately and keep your dentist’s recommendations in the picture.
Imagine ordering a decaf latte and being handed oat milk. Both are perfectly understandable preferences. They just answer different questions.
“Does it contain SLS?” and “Does it contain fluoride?” deserve two separate answers.
What should you look for when switching?
Begin with the reason you want to switch. Less foam? A particular ingredient you have been told to avoid? A flavour you would actually look forward to?
Then read the label with that reason in mind. It is much easier than trying to find a toothpaste that wins every argument ever held in a comment section.

Once you know what you are choosing, the first less-bubbly brush becomes a lot less mysterious.
